Our God Is Still Stronger

Romans 8:31 — “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Chris Tomlin had written worship songs before—plenty of them. Some had topped charts. Others quietly made their way into small-town churches and across campgrounds, sanctuaries, and stadiums alike.

But this one didn’t start with him.

One day, producer and songwriter Ed Cash sent over a chorus—just a rough draft. “Our God is greater, our God is stronger…” No polish, no bridge. Just a line that wouldn’t let go.

Chris couldn’t explain why, but something in him leaned forward when he heard it. He knew it wasn’t meant to simply sound good or get a crowd on their feet. It was meant to be deeper. These weren’t lyrics for show. They were words for anyone who had ever wondered if God had forgotten them.

As time went on, the team built more lines around the chorus. “God, You are higher than any other.” The song took shape fast. In ministry, not everything does, but this one did.

In the weeks leading up to the young adult conference, Passion 2010, there were flights, rehearsals, and last-minute changes. The usual. The work was constant, but Chris kept circling back to the same prayer—Let them see You, not me.

When the band took the stage in that packed arena, the energy was high. Lights, movement, sound, but what hit hardest wasn’t volume—it was clarity of the chorus.

“Our God is greater. Our God is stronger. God, You are higher than any other.”

That wasn’t just a moment for college students overwhelmed by the weight of their futures. No, it is something that still reaches people now. People like you—who’ve been doing your best to stay faithful in the small, hidden places. Who have carried prayers for years with no answers in sight. Who wonder if God is still paying attention.

So maybe today, instead of mustering up your own strength, you just need to lean on what’s already true:

“And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us?”

Not because you feel strong, but because He is.

Not because everything is clear, but because He is still certain.

And, like Chris and his friends that day, I hope you’ll find that the same words to sing as God carries you forward.

Romans 8:31 – “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”

David didn’t look like a warrior. He was sunburned from long days in the hills, and his hands smelled like sheep. He didn’t carry a sword or shield, just a sling and a knapsack with bread and cheese for his brothers at the battlefront.

But when he reached the camp, the air felt thick with something worse than war—fear.

Goliath was enormous, and louder than life. He strutted out each morning, mocking Israel and their God, and the soldiers, grown men seasoned by battle, just stared at the dirt. Nobody moved. Not even the king.

But David couldn’t stomach the silence.

He asked why no one was stepping up. They laughed and told him to mind his sheep. But David had seen deliverance before—in the hills, from the jaws of lions, from the claws of bears. This was no different. This giant wasn’t bigger than the God he knew.

He knelt by a stream, careful with his choices. Five smooth stones. One sling. And a heart full of faith.

As David stepped into the valley, Goliath laugh thundered. But David’s eyes were steady on the One who had always been faithful. He knew this fight wasn’t his to win. It was God’s.

A single stone flew, small but mighty. Time seemed to stand still. Then, with a mighty crash, Goliath fell. Silence spread, followed by a roar of victory. What followed was a surge of courage in men who had once been paralyzed by fear.

What mattered most wasn’t that David was brave. It was that he was certain. Certain of God’s power. Certain that one step in faith could be enough to move heaven.

We spend too much time counting stones, doubting our worth, imagining every way we could fail. But maybe the question isn’t “Are you enough?” Maybe it’s: Do you trust the One who is?

God still brings giants to the ground, and He still uses the unexpected to do it. So, take heart. Let your faith rise and stay certain that He is about to do what only He can do.

God Believes in You

Romans 8:31

The idea that we are supposed to believe in God is a pretty common one. But what about the idea that God believes in you?

Some years ago, I was walking through a season of discouragement and doubt. One evening, I went to church searching for a touch from God. The service consisted of great worship and solid teaching, but I didn’t get anything out of it and left feeling even more defeated.

I questioned God’s love for me. Why had He not shown up in the way I needed? Deepening darkness crept in and I cried out from the depths of my heart with a simple, desperate prayer.

“Lord, please help me! If you don’t help me now, I’m not sure I’ll recover.”

The response I heard in my spirit shocked me. “I believe in you.”

Did God really believe in me? And if so, what did that mean?

I searched the scriptures and began to realize that in the same way a parent believes in a child, God believes in His children. He created us in His image and likeness, entrusting the Earth to our care.

You don’t entrust something to someone you don’t believe in. While we failed in the garden, and have failed time and time again throughout history, He still chose to give His only Son so we could partner with Him in the fulfillment of His will.

The reality is God could have done all of this by Himself, but instead, He calls us higher, uniquely gifting each of us to represent Him. The good news is, we don’t have to do this in our own strength.

No matter how difficult things might seem, God is still for you. God believes in you. God is counting on you. Will you let that truth sink into your heart so deeply that it not only changes your own life but also compels you to carry that message of hope to others who need to hear it?
