Lommie Jenkins should be one of your LOVE IS IN THE AIR winners, and here is why. You will find many people who are loving, for sure. But rarely do you find someone loving in a creative, kind, and unique way. She listens as you talk and will lovingly meet a need that she heard you mentioned that you need. That is her breed of love….

She has been an educator in Monroe City Schools for over 40 years, working with special needs children. Years ago, Lommie chartered the first Special Needs Girl Scouts Troops for her students due to her belief in the power of “I can.” Lommie is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, where she is known for working with the girl wing of the organization year in and year out.

Lommie upholds its motto,” A community-conscious, action-oriented organization.” In her church, Lommie has been the facilitator for the Daughters of Esther (DOE), a youth organization. She constantly creates positive activities for the girls. The group collected and donated bottled water to the Renewal Center to help with the increased need for water during summer.

Over the years, Loomie has initiated food drives, such as peanut butter and canned goods drives, to keep the girls aware of others’ needs and donate items to local agencies. The girls are always involved in the drop-off of the items. She coordinated with a DOE group from Arkansas, and the two DOEs met in a center location, and the girls had a memorable time.

One of Lommie’s past DOEs is now an attorney in Ouachita Parish. Most have gone to college. Lommie continues to be a “safe space” for her youths to call and be encouraged. Lommie makes time to visit her children school, have lunch with them and show them they are special.

And if that is not enough love, Lommie is the Senior Ministry Facilitator with her church, where she hosts a monthly fun and food time at the church for seniors with great information shared. She has planned, organized, and taken seniors to Jackson, Mississippi, to see the home church of Christ Holiness, USA, where many have been members for years but never had the privilege of seeing the Mother Church. Lommie made it possible for those seniors to travel at affordable costs. The price included a comprehensive handbook that was first-rate on the history of the sites and included games and fun on the ride over.

No one in the church can say that when they have a death or need, Loomie will go into her freezer and cook up something to take or ask you to pick up. She has hosted dinners for many pastors and ministers. Lommie is a retired widow who manages her coins to sow into others.

Again, as to her ways of showing love, my husband’s brother died, and we were home getting ready to attend the services. Lommie called and told me to step out the door, and there was a warm pound cake at the door. My husband loves her pound cakes. My brother died in New Orleans recently, and she arranged for me to pick up two homemade pound cakes wrapped for the trip to New Orleans for the services. The cakes were a big hit.

I can go on and on about Lommie making, selling, and giving away masks during COVID. She created matching hats and masks that are the cutest when I wear them. Let me give you one more example of the way Lommie shows love and you can stop reading. I do a ministry called Wellness Wagon at Clara Hall Elementary School whereby every Monday, we take fresh fruit and healthy snacks to the teachers and support staff. Lommie surprised me Monday by being there to help me assemble the items when I got to the teacher’s lounge. She works with her own ministry initiatives but will help others with theirs.
